Niece is considering allowing her aunt to adopt her 3 month old infant. The father is unknown.

Assume that the mom is agreeable to adoption or guardianship. As the aunt, what's the best way to make sure the child is taken care of. Aunt will provide financial, emotional support, raise as her own. Does healthcare require her to be adopted or can I cover her as her guardian?

What's the best route for a permanent fix to a bad situation? Mom may be afraid of what people will think if she goes with adoption(sounds so final)then guardianship came up. From the Aunt point of view, what should I press for?

Thanks to all!

Adoption is permanent.

A guardianship can be dissolved later.

Whether health insurer covers child of guardianship depends on that insurer's policies. You need to check with the insurer for an answer on that.

If the child is adopted, the child is yours and would be covered the same as a natural-born child under your policy.

Only you can decide what to press for.
