I am writing in on behalf of a friend "Sara" who wants either to adopt her mother or make her a dependent. Her parents are divorced and her father pays for the house her mother lives in. This apparently consists of the "one-half" of the income that Sara is required to supply in order to claim her mother as a dependent. One lawyer said that the process would cost upwards of $1500 or more. However, she does not have that sort of money. Sara's mother cannot support herself and relies upon Sara for monetary support for every other aspect of her life aside from housing. Since Sara is a primary support for her mother anyway, is there a way to make it legal for a more reasonable fee or is she out of luck?
