Question

adopting a new born

What is the name of your state? PA

A co-worker came to me asking if I would be interested in adopting a new born. Just born yesterday 01/09/05 in NY. This is the 6th child for the mother and can not financially care for the child, this is why she wants to give the baby up. The Father wants no part of the child. I am hesitant only because my co-worker's sister in law is the person arranging the placement of the child. She wanted to try to keep the baby in the family so that the mother could keep in contact with the child but willing to place the baby in a safe enviroment. They want to meet my husband and I this coming weekend, and if everything goes well they will hand me the baby. The child will not be leaving the hospital with the mother but with my co-worker's sister-in-law. Should I get a lawyer right away? Should I have atty paper drawn up stating that the mother is signing over her parental rights and will be in my custody until the adoption is final. I am a little hesitant. I don't want to put my hope high. Anyone with advice would be greatly appreciated.
