adoption/ad lidum

What is the name of your state? Texas.

I'm attempting to adopt my step-children. They have a court appointed ad lidum. Is he overstepping his job title by trying to convince the children what a wonderful individual their Biological Father is?

The Biological Father is $70,000 behind on support/medical expenses and sees the children once or twice every three years....and lives within 30 min. drive. Doesn't acknowledge birthdays, Christmas and the few times he has seen them he's been drunk or left them with others.

He's a car salesman and wears nothing but "Perry Ellis" or comparable....it's not a matter of money.

The children (11 yr. & 14 Yr.) are upset and want to know if the ad lidum can be replaced with someone a little close to neutral.
If so, how do they do it?
