Adoption of adult non resident alien

From: South Carolina

I have been doing taxes for a non-resident alien residing in Ohio. She is here on a visa, which will expire when her research grant runs out whereby she must return to Russia. She has asked me if I could adopt her (she is around 40 years old). My question is would adopting this person help her in any way to achieve permanent residency here in the US?

Hello,
I'm not a lawyer, but I guess that adoption is for children who really need help. According to your words, this woman is older than 21 years old and can take responsibility for herself.

nope. since you aren't considering marriage (which at this point might be fraud), woman goes home when her research grant runs out.

Adult adoption does not provide an end run around immigration laws. Even when adopting an INFANT internationally, the "parents" must apply for, and be granted a Visa for their child.

However, adult adoption confers NO special immigration status.
