My wife has a newphew in the Philippines who is 3 years old. The mother is nowhere to be found and the father, her brother, can't take care of himself let alone the child. We would like to adopt him. I spoke with one lawyer who told me one of us would have to live with him for 2 years which really isn't plausible. I was told though if the child is considered an orphan that 2 year thing isn't necessary. If we get the father to sign away his rights to the child making him an orphan would we then be allowed to adopt him and bring him here to live with us? We are going to the Philippines in October so we would like to try to get as much info as possible so we can decide what our next step should be.
