Adoption Name Change

What is the name of your state? New York State

I am planning to adopt my wife's two children from a previous mariage. The Bio father has never been a part of their lives and will allow consent to avoid further child support payments. The children are 19 and 16. Both are in favor of the adoption but the sixteen year insist she does not want to change her last name. Is this a problem? Can she retain her birth name ?

My response:

Why do you want to place yourself legally on the hook? What is your purpose in adopting these kids?

Why buy the cow when you're already sucking on the teet?
