Adoption of a Parent

What is the name of your state?

Texas

This is a revision of my last scenario. First, I should probably have specified that "Sara" is an E-3 in the military. As I've said "Sara" is providing complete monatary support (including medical, medication, water, phone, electric, gas, food) to her mother. "Sara" believes that it would be more economical for her to adopt her mother because of the this. She would feel more comfortable if her mother was living with her however the military requires legal documentation proving dependency or adoption. Her father is paying for the house as outlined in their agreement in their divorce paperwork. This has nothing to do with taxes. Would you be able to tell me the requirements of adopting a parent in Texas? "Sara's" mom is not incapacitated and is still physically able to care for herself, and I understand that, that might be a requirement for adopting a parent. The reason "Sara's" mother is unable to work is because she is sick and is unable to qualify for most jobs. Sorry for being so long winded but my friend is in need of help.

You do not have to "adopt" the mother - all you have to do is go to your command and put your parent on as a dependent. We have done this with my FIL - Your S-1 should have more details - Good Luck

She can't just put her mother on as a dependent, she's tried. She would have to provide for over half of her mother's income and she doesn't because her father pays for the house and the mortgage is over half of her income. "Sara's" sister who's also in the military has tried already. This is why she's trying to adopt her mother.
