adoption of stepchild

i have been living since childhood with my mom's married name. all of my records are in this name, although i never had it legally changed. i understand that i am legal in doing this.
i was married to a woman who had a child who is now 15. she was never married to the birth father and had no contact since birth. i want to legally adopt him with my assumed name, she agrees and he strongly agrees. we are now divorced and she has remarried again, her new husband agrees to this too. we are in california . he wants to do this so all of his records, which are already in my name will become legally his. he needs to get his first drivers license and i want him as beneficiary on all of my legal documents.
can we do this in california?
