Can we do step parent adoption w/out a lawyer

What is the name of your state? IA

Short story...We paid a lawyer to get my ex to sign over his rights to his daughter. We were making payments on it and the lawyer said once he signed his rights away we would move into the adoption (my husband). He signed them away...lawyer said we couldn't proceed w/ the step parent adoption till we had paid her in full. Took us about 6mo to pay it all off. When it was done she said we had to pay a new retainer before proceeding w/adoption. We didn't have the money. Now I want to know if my husband can adopt my daughter w/out using a lawyer.

Ewww...

Geez.. I just don't ever recommend doing this action without a lawyer. What I would do is get the information she has released to you and start making calls. Find a free consult with another because it shouldn't be that hard nor should it be very expensive to do this but it has to be by the book. How much did that last attorney charge? I mean the way you explained it is all she did was draw up something and the bio father signed off on it.

I'd also see if IA has a legal service that charges on a sliding scale or contact IA Bar Assoc.
