What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Minnesota
Hello,
My husband committed suicide in August 2007, and left behind 3 children. They receive SS survivor benefits. I am getting re-married in September of this year and my soon to be husband would love to adopt the kids.
Will this cause my children to lose their survivors benefits? Because I don't want that to happen. Their father left them with heartache and emotional problems that we still are dealing with, and probably will for a good long time, and that money helps with the co-pays and therapies for my children. I get nothing from SS.
Now, I have called the SS office and asked this question, but the person on the phone did not sound real sure of herself and honestly, I don't trust anything that's not in writing like this and I cannot find anything on the SS website. They said it would not cause my children to lose their benefits as their bio dad is still their bio dad.
I thought with adoption that the name of the father on the birth certificate was changed? So, wouldn't that affect it?
And, how can I get that in writing from them?
If nothing else, my kids want their last name changed to my soon-to-be husband's name.
Thanks
