Ex wants to stop adoption

Ohio

Hi everyone, It is a long story and quite stressed about it. I found out I had a daughter 2 months after she was born. My ex didn't want want me to find out and didn't name me on the birth certificate. She asked if I would go with her to the bank and sign Termination of Rights so her parents could adopt her. I was told she would have medical insurance and a better well being. This was back in November. Then an hour or so ago, she called me up saying she told her lawyer to shred the termination of rights we signed. Is this possible , and can she stop the adoption after all this time?

You went to a BANK to sign off your rights? It doesn't work that way. She and you would have to go to court. And since you have not yet legally established paternity, nothing can happen until you do.

So, get an attorney and file for a court ordered DNA test. Realize however that you will not be able to terminate your parental rights unless her husband is going to adopt the child or unless her parents are actually going to adopt the child through the courts.

Thank you for the quick reply

Yes it was a bank , she said her lawyer wanted us to go in and sign the document. We did and then it was notorized after we both signed. My ex told me it would be sent to her lawyer , then the courts would award her parents the adoption. This is very confusing to me and something tells me I shouldn't have trusted her so much.

To the best of my knowledge, neither you nor she can terminate parental rights this way. You should not have trusted her then and you definitely should not trust her now.

Get a court ordered DNA test and find out if this child is even yours.
