Finding Ex Re: Adoption

Maine. My Ex husband has been out of my childrens lives for 5 years. The only father they've ever known is my husband who wants to adopt them. They are 7 & 8. I believe my ex lives out of state (Virginia?) We get no support. We must terminate his rights before husband can adopt. What is the first step in finding him and doing this?

If you can not find him, you will need an attorney to make sure everything is done perfectly. You can get the adoption done with out notifying him.

If you can think of his possible whereabouts, start with the phone book.

When I consulted my attorney he said I could not do this without notifiying biological father.

If you do not know the location of an individual, the law allows for publications to be made in their last known locations(s). You must also send certain legal documents to the military branches who will inform you whether or not the individual is in their service.

You can not do this with out notifying the biological father IF you know where the biological father is! Otherwise, you still have to prove that you made a diligent effort to contact him.

I would still suggest performing some simple searches yourself. It will cost less and take less time if you do know his whereabouts. Speak with your attorney again or consult a few other attorneys.

I agree.

lmost 6 years ago I was charged with DWI, I pleaded no contest and paid a fine. Never again I had any
problems with the law. Now, I am considering to become a US citizen, can someone tell me please how this
could affect me?
