I need to add my birth father to birth certificate

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NM
Hi, I live in Joliet IL but was born in Gallup new Mexico. I need to add my birth father to my birth certificate so me and my two children can be enrolled in the Navajo nation. I am not sure how to go about this. I don't know if I can do it here or if I have to go to NM. I have tried to see what steps to take but I get the run around. I am not sure if I can do the acknowledgment of paternity or if I would have to get a blood test. I am also not sure how to even get a court order if I need one. I am completly lost. Can you point me in the right direction?

Lots of people would like to add their children to the Navajo Nation. It's not so easy.

You absolutely need an attorney experienced in Tribal Law. There are pitfalls galore in what you propose to undertake.

Is your birth father still alive?

See, the problem is that everyone wants to be a Native American now because of the casino wealth...

Yes, my birth father is still alive and he is well aware of what we are trying to do. and so is my mother. I am 1/2 navajo and my kids are 1/4 navajo. And believe me, I'm not doing this for casino wealth. Navajo is one of the poorest tribes. I want my kids to have benefits for college down the road and I want them to know about their background. I should be proud to be native american.

I believe you have reason to be proud as well.

I just wanted to outline that not everyone's motives are as innocent as yours.

your birth father being alive is going to be a huge help.

I have found a lawyer in Gallup NM who specializes in Indian law and works on the reservation as well as not. I have to call him today, I just hope it wont cost me an arm and a leg.

What will need to be done is to establish paternity for you. Which means getting a court order for your FATHER to take a paternity test.
Parents should remember 3 things: Love your kids more than you hate your ex (or soon to be ex); when you have children the relationship with the other parent is until death; your children determine what type of nursing home you end up in.
