is this a legal adoption?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? TX

my ex wife sent papers claiming that if I don't pay up all my past due child support Iwill be taken to Jail. how ever it aslo gave another option:
sign away rights and let son be adopted by thier stepfather and all debt be forgiven and I don't go to jail.

I have paid little bits here and there and I have had contact with my kids on rare ocasions. (she moved out of state and seeing them is difficult)

Please any advise is helpful

It is possible for you to voluntarily relinquish your rights to allow the step father to adopt. HOWEVER, if this is what you want to do, you NEED to have an attorney. IF your ex NEVER recieved any public assistance it is legally possible for her to forgive the arrears, but you need to make sure that it is done correctly, which is another reason you need an attorney.
