legal custody of nephews mom deceased dad incarcerated

What is the name of your state? sc

do I need to go through adoption to gain legal guardianship of my nephews? Father murdered mother and is in prison for 30 years. the children were removed from the home and given to the family with no legal documents of guardianship. I need to get them in school and do not know where to begin.

No, you don't need to go through adoption. Did CPS give you placement?...

You probably need a consult with a local attorney.

You don't have to adopt them but you have to establish either a guardianship or a conservatorship through a court to prove care, custody and control to the school district. don't forget the immunizations.
