Name Change of Minor

What is the name of your state? California

My grandson wants to have his last name changed so he will have the same last name as his step-dad, mom and brother. However, my daughter-in-law has not seen his father since he was one month old and he is now 11.

The court said if we don't know where the father is we must contact the grandparents, however, we do not know where they are either.

Has anyone had this experience before and what do we do? We are filing the papers ourselves.
