notification to biological parent?

I live in NY State and have 2 grown children. About 7 years ago when they were 18yrs and 21yrs they were adopted by their step-mother. I knew nothing of this until fairly recently. My children are now close to me again and wish to undo what happened. They are now 25yrs and 28yrs. Is there any possibility the adoption was not legal as I was never officially notified? ...or were they old enough that I didn't have to be told? I have lived in the same location for many years so would have been easy to find.
