What is the name of your state? LA, but the state I am wondering about is GA

If a couple is taking the private route to adoption, do any social workers or other professionals (i.e. psychologists) meet with them, do home visits or anything like that? We recently heard through the grapevine that former friends of ours are trying to adopt a child and I wondered if they would have to go through any psychological evals something similar if they are attempting a private adoption (I would guess that they are). Or is that what MAKES it a private adoption, that all this is bypassed? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I know nothing about adoption.
