roadblocks for adoption

What is the name of your state?Massachusetts I am a 38 year old man looking to adopt. I do have a few hurdles though and I don't know where to turn? I have a criminal history,although almost 20 years ago and i was 17,18
years old when all of this took place,I was told I am not recomened to be and suitable adoptive family because of what was in my corey check. Is there any thing I can do? I have been sober and an active member of my community for almost 14 years.

just throwing this out there, not sure, but maybe private adoption has less stringent guidelines?
