My birth certificate is sealed and I would like to know if I have the right to obtain this information. If so, how would I go about doing it? My "family" has kept any and all information from me regarding my medical background, etc. They say I am not adopted, but I am the only child who has a sealed birth certificate. Do I have any rights? What about the Freedom of Information Act? Please help. This is very important.

First of all have you contacted Vital Records to confirm that your certificate is sealed?
What hospital does your family say you were born at? You can check their records to see if anyone from your family gave birth the day your mom and dad say you were born.
Other than the birth certificate being sealed, what makes you think you are adopted?? Do you have any siblings older than you that would be able to remember if your mom was pregnant? I am just throwing somethings out there.
In my state you can file a petition to ask the courts to release your medical information to you if there is an emergency that can be proven. It is a difficult task from what I understand. Also (htis is based off my experience in trying to get my records) you can call Vital Statistics where you were adopted and they have forms you can fill out to obtain your unidentifying information which will tell you hwo old mom and dad were, where you were born and who handled the adoption.
I realize you just want some medical information but it is not all that easy.
Have you spoken to an attorney, I would suggest a free consultation, they may be able to point you in the right direction.

I hope that I helped a little more. Your best bet is to contact the courts and Vital Records and see what your options are.

Good luck!

FarmerJ, I know that your answer was directed to the poster but I am wondering if you could fill me in on your hints? I am an adoptee in a state that is not all that friendly. I have requested my unidentifying info and have turned up nothing. I really would like to find out who my bio parents are. My children and I have an orthopoedic disorder and think it is hereditary but because it isn't life threatening we can't request the records be opend for medical purposes. Thanks if you can help.

Dennis, I really hope you have came up with something. Hopefully you are not waiting for an email response from this site to see if someone has replied as that part is not working yet!

Denise go look at your current birth certificate If its a court ordered remake there may well be unusual markings on it like say A.O. (month/day /year) A. O. >> adoption order . also other hint is sometimes remade certs have distinct differences compared to non adoptive . like my sisters sons cert doesnt have any of the long history about prenatal care or grandparents , all the other details that are on the certs of kids who were not adopted so go look at certs for the day you were born and compare them with yours . pay attn the clues can be there its just your in different state so B Certs will vary according to state in format .
