step parent adoption

What is the name of your state? Michigan

Can you file step parent adoption paperwork without the help of a lawyer?

Also does the child have to be a min. age?

We have consent from the mother and she wants to get this over with ASAP as do we. Our child is a newborn.

It CAN be done without a lawyer but is not recommended. I know in my state there has to be a home study done by the welfare department... there is a punitive father registry that has to be attended too... also there is money to the health department when reissuing the BC's. There are a lot of issues to make sure they are done and done correctly not only to secure the adoption but to make sure nothing comes up later in life. Speak to a lawyer for a free consultation.
