Step parent Adoption- bio parent consenting

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MD

I have been with the same man for 9 years and am getting married in June. My son wants him to adopt him and he wants to do the same. The bio father who does not pay child support and hasn't seen him in 5 years is willing to sign consent.

Do I need to get a lawyer or can I do this my self?
Do I have to wait till I am married ?

definitely wait until your married. can't adopt a stranger's child. can adopt your spouse's child.

DO get a lawyer. wouldn't want a loophole waving about that would vacate the adoption, would you?

That is what I was thinking, just wanted to see what others opinons where.
