Turning 18...

What is the name of your state? New York

My sister put her 2 children up for adoption 10 years ago...at age 7 and 8... she gave them to our mom's best friend because she had to go to prison and didn't want the state to take custody... she has since gotten her life together and is waiting anxiously for the day she could reunite with them. Her oldest daughter is turning 18 next month, and we are wondering what she can do to contact her? My Mom's friend since turned on her and wouldn't allow the agreed upon letters, pictures, etc, so my sister hasn't seen or talked with them since the day in court when she signed over her rights...

Can she call Katie on her 18th birthday or would that be illegal? She wants to do that, but I have been trying to convince her it's not the right way to go about it. After all, her children are in a loving home with loving parents, and it should be their idea to contact her, not the other way around...

Can anyone offer any advice I may be able to take back to her on this??

Thank you
Julianna

No, its not at all illegal for her to contact an adult. A telephone call may not be the best way to handle a first contact. A letter would probably be better.

Thank you... I agree with you on the phone call 100%... after all... it has been 10 years and while we all have hopes that it will be a wonderful reunion... we have tried to make her understand that it could take a lot of time...

I will let her know... thanks again!
