Unmarried Couple Question

What is the name of your state? California
My question is that if a woman has already adopted children as a single parent and later meets a man who becomes their father figure, in the state of California or in the US for that matter can he then adopt her children as well without them being already married or is it required that they be legally married first?

Thanks

A single person can adopt - as the only parent. However, in a co-parent sitauation, the state wants the co-parent to be in a legally committed relationship before the "step-parent" adoption may occur. I am not aware of any state that allows a non-married partner to be a co-adoptor.

And the bio-parent (is that term still politically correct?) needs to consent or the court needs to otherwise notice the other parent in.
