Question

I live in Huntington Beach California. I have only seen my daughter once when she was born and once when she was about four months old. The mother and I have not been in contact because of her past drug problems. My daughter is seven and I have paid all past due child support ($13,000) and have been paying $354.00 - $454.00 per month since I was recognized as the father with a DNA test over five years ago. I am still paying support. I recieved notice in the mail that her husband wants to adopt my daughter. This raises numerous questions. Will I continue to pay child support? Can I have it shown in the record that I had been paying support? Can I have him and her take a drug test to ensure the safety of my child? If they were to be divorced will I have to start paying child support again? thank for the help.

I don't know the answers to all of your questions, but I do know that when the child is adopted, you will not have to pay child support any longer. If they were to be divorced, then he would be the one to pay child support.

My advice with any adoption would be to get an attorney, make sure that all is covered, especially your side. He/she will be able to help you answer the rest of your questions.

Good luck!
