Who is qualified to adopt?

I am a single mother who lives in Colorado with full custody of my daughter. My daughter's father and I were never married and there have need no custodial agrements signed. The birth father of my daughter barely has any contact with me or our daughter, but I am living with my boyfiend who absolutely adores my daughter and acts like a father to her. He is the only real male figure she has known. My boyfriend would like to adopt her, but would he be able to adopt her since he and I are not married?
