Ailimony & Taxes

Pennsylvania, I allow my legally seperated wife to live rent free in my paid off home in lieu of ailimony. why am i having a problem trying to claim it on my income taxes? how can i resolve this problem? i am struggling to survive, after 2 yrs. of layoffs & would greatly appreciate any helpful advice. thank you.
