Back taxes

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York

If my ex-wife owe back taxes from before we were divorced, can I get awarded the half she owes out of the alimony payments that I pay to her.
In other words is it legal to stop paying at a certain point where the remainder of payments is equal to her half of the tax. Any suggestions?

No, you cannot do that. However, if she was ordered in the divorce decree to pay a percentage of the back taxes, and she has not, then you can take her back to court for contempt for non-payment. At that point the judge might reduce your alimony payments to make up for the taxes, or the judge might take other action.
