Dad has Alzheimer's, mom going to lose house?

Texas-

I hope I got the right forum here.

My dad has gotten Alzheimer's and is in the late stages of it. Currently he is living with my mom but we really need to put him in a home. The thing is, if we do this, the state will take all his Social Security and give it to the home where he will be staying, or so we have been told. If this happens, mom will lose her house.

Can anybody clarify this for me.

Thanks for any help!

In general, yes, the state will take his income

Yes, in general, the state will require his income be used if he needs to be institutionalized (since it will cost the state FAR more than his social security check to care for him in a nursing home)

Some states, however, offer in-home services that may allow you to keep his income.

Please check with a local elderlaw lawyer (or legal clinic, if available) to determine the options available to you in your particular state.

Being in the health-care industry, I see too many times when people with Alzheimers are put into nursing homes and then neglected and therefore deteriorate further. If at all possible, keep your father in the home where he is most comfortable. I have a feeling it is not just your moms home, is it?

It may not be legal advice, but, it comes from the heart.
