Residence of California. A friend of mine is going to court, without lawyer representation because he cannot afford the legal fees (lawyer wants $5,000 retainer fee). He has been divorced for 5 years and has been paying spousal support of $850 and child support of $850. They have been married 25 years. She is going back to court and wants him to pay the legal fees and have him pay spousal support for more years or even forever. She claims she cannot work because their 20 year old son needs her. He goes to school and is very smart. He has a mind of a 13 year old. By they way, the spousal support was to end the end of this year.

Question is what are the disadvanges of going to court without a lawyer? The lawyer he has had before wants $5,000 retainer fee, but my friend feels that his laywer is not doing much for him. What should he look out for?
