spousal support in PA(Allegheny County)

I live in the state of Pennsylvania. In 2003 my spousal support was terminated because I had a boyfriend that was not living with me. The judge said the "boyfriend" was enough to terminate my spousal support.
I have a male friend who is paying his wife spousal support and she was cheating on him for 6 years during the marriage and now has a different boyfriend. Can he stop the spousal support because she had a boyfriend during the marrige and now has a boyfriend. They have been seperated for a while now. This just does'nt seem right for him to pay her spousal support. He Has a hearing on Nov 1st.

Thanks, Tammy

spousal support

Pennsylvania. Do you have to pay spousal support if your spouse was cheating during the marriage and now has a boyfriend?

spousal support is not an automatic result of divorce, one would have to request it, then the judge would have to deem it necessary, then the judge would have to order it- a whole lot of negotiation can go on in between. but adultery does not immediately make one ineligible to receive it.

I am curious what the judge based the decision on to terminate support.
Do you have any specific info re: why the judge made this decision?

This was an excellent article on PA laws concerning spousal support and alimony, and the impact of adultery.

However, family couts are ruled by a judge, not a jury. That is the legal reality at this time. Personally, I only believe alimony should be awarded in very limited cases - 20+ marriage, 50+ or disabilities, etc. But, that is not the way it is in all states. The link I provided gave a good explanation, in layman terms, of how alimony worked in the OP's state.

It is obvious from your replies to this & other inquiries that you feel severely screwed on a alimony settlement. If you think a jury in family court is more appropriate than a judge, why don't you work towards that goal? Get involved in local politics. Write to your congressman, whatever. Otherwise, STHU.
