Would like to know if my son can represent himself in court or if I can as his mother.

Sure you can.

If your son needed his tonsils taken out, who would you choose to remove them?

A - He could do it himself

B - You would do it

C - A licensed surgeon

You and your son should expect to do as well in the court room, as you would do in the operating room.

Now why wouldn't you prefer a public defender handle his case?

He can either have an attorney represent him (court appointed or paid for by whomever), or he can represent himself (if over 18 in criminal court) ... but unless you are an attorney, you cannot represent him.
