Arrest on public warrant

I am a 17 year old from massachusetts, In feb of last year my parents, after being asked by the school, due to my disruptive behavior, file'd a CHINS on me, a chins is a civil court procedure which puts me on a probation status with my parents through the court system, I must obide by my parents rules and check back with a judge every few months to see how I am doing. On december 29th both my self and my parents forgot about my court appointment, because of this a criminal public warrent was issued for skipping court, and a letter was sent home telling me how to avoid arrest and show up in court to handle this. the problem was i was arrested less than 24 hours after the warrent was issued,(the police here have nothign better to do) i did not even have time to get the letter the court sent in the mail, can the police arrest me without prior notice? i feel this is unfair because i have a criminal record now and this could of been avoided if i had just receved notification prior to my arrest. I did not even have a chane to goto the court house and work this out, please help

A warrant is an order by a judge commanding law enforcement to take the person named on the warrant in to custody.

No, they do not have to give prior warning. And you're right, they did have nothing beter to do than arresting a wanted person ... that's what they do.
