What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? I live in England but I am writing a novel about an event in the US.
A person goes on vacation to the States from Britain and a relative is killed. As a witness, do they have to stay in the US for the trial?
To be honest this is for a book plot. The character goes on vacation from England with his granddaughter. She is gunned down accidentally when a robbery goes wrong and a shoot out with police occurs on the street. No one knows at first if it was a police bullet or a robbers bullet that kills the child. Can the grandfather, who is a witness, be compelled to remain the States until the trial ends? If so, who pays his expenses? If not, what is the procedure? Long shot asking this but if you answer, thank you.
