Hi,
I am 19. i was caughting shoplifting with under $100. i had a witness that saw me shoplifted. was given a civil demand that had to pay shortly but i haven't receive it yet. I was arrested and bought to a station whileI was fingerprinted and they had a photograph from my california id, was given a ticket with a court date and misdemeanor charge with petty theft, first offense. One of the police officer said we will be doing community service. i am really scare and worried. i dont know what to expect. i am planning to be appointed a public defender there and plea guilty. Im not sure what to do. i know im wrong, i couldn't and i have to pay for my mistake and have to take responsiblity for it. Any advice? how long will it be on my record?

Same thing happened to me when I had just turned 18. That was many years ago and I went before the judge on my appointed day and plead no contest (guilty). I just had to pay a fine of $65.00. It was my first offense.

If the value is under $50 then they can drop it to an infraction. In any event, you can likely get a good deal if you have no other criminal history. So if they ultimately file this as a misdemeanor, speak to your attorney about the possible results.
