What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? TN

Hey all,

On Friday night, I was involved in a bar fight. The other person involved received a small cut above their eye. After being escorted out, a police officer was waiting by the entrance. I assumed I would be questioned, but he didn't speak to me at all and only seemed interested in making sure I left the premises. My questions are:

1. Should I contact the local police department to see if a report has been filed against me?
2. What is the likelihood of police showing up to my job or house to arrest me given that they've attempted no contact for two days after the incident?

Do you know the person that you injured?

It's doubtful that anything good could come of you contacting the police. I would not worry about it until and if you are contacted.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I didn't know the other person involved, but I am worried police could have obtained my name from my bar tab.

If the small cut above the bar patron's eye required any sort of medical treatment (e.g., stitches), you could find yourself having to foot the costs of his medical bill, this even if no criminal charges arise from the bar fight.

I second Highwayman's advice and would add:

"I do not answer questions without my lawyer present."
Repeat it and learn it.

Police officer says, "Mr. Cob, it looks like its going to rain later, doesn't it?"
You say, "I do not answer questions without my lawyer present."
Police officer who went to high school with your wife says, "How is Suzie doing after the surgery?"
You say, "I do not answer questions without my lawyer present."

Thanks for the reply. I actually do feel obligated to help out with medical costs if treatment was required, but I have no way of contacting the other person.

Thank you for the advice. I will keep this in mind if the police get involved.

I think if there were any medical expenses incurred as a result of the fight, you will not have to worry about contacting the other person. S/he will more than likely find a way to contact you. Absent a police report, however, the person could have a difficult time proving you were responsible for the injury. Keep that in mind if you are presented with a hefty medical bill.

Hmmm ... bar fights ... let's put this into perspective. People drink, they fight, the police clear them out and then go on their way. Unless people are hell bent on making an issue at the time the police are there, they are NOT going to spend any time following up on something that is so common. They are not going to go out of their way to make work.

I'll sum it up in the words of my previous District Attorney when rejecting a complaint involving two fighters from a bar: "No charges. Drunks doing what drunks do."
