Criminal or civil? What is the name of your state? Arizona Currently, recently moved from North Carolina. My sister packed up and left NC for Arizona 2 months ago on a whim. She took with her a laptop computer she had rented from Rent-a-Center. She has not returned it. I'm honestly not sure if she has it or not. Rent-a-center has been calling me non-stop, talking about filing charges for failure to return rental property. I've looked it up, and it's a misdemeanor. I have a couple of questions. 1-If charges are filed, will they pick her up in Arizona and ship her back to NC to face them? 2- If she has the computer, can she just turn it in? 3- If she doesn't have it, what can we expect to happen to her? 4- Anything else I should know? Should I get her a lawyer? Thanks in advance. |

A: Yes, if it is a felony. Q: If she has the computer, can she just turn it in? A: Yes. Q: If she doesn't have it, what can we expect to happen to her? A: I don't have ESP. Q: Anything else I should know? A: I don't know you well enough to answer that question. Q: Should I get her a lawyer? A: No; you should stop trying to rescue your sister. She has no use for your help and you are enabling her. Sounds like she's headed for jail. |

| It's a misdemeanor. Does that change anything? |

| And, of course, her credit rating will tank when the debt goes to collections and she has collections agents dogging her ... and not only will she owe for the original market value of the computer (not it's current retail value) she will also owe the collections fees. - Carl
