Email threat--does this qualify as assault?

Hi everyone, I hope this question is in the right part of the forum, and thank you in advance for reading my post. Basically, I was involved in a verbal argument with someone I know. It was not a serious argument, just your run of the mill disagreement. But a couple days later, this person's boyfriend forwards me an email that contains their email conversation. In the email conversation, the woman says to him that she might want to smack me next time we get into an argument. He then replies that he'll take care of that for her. Does this qualify as assault, and would it succeed in court? The email is solid evidence, but I'm not familiar if emails like this qualify.

Are you joking? No, I suppose not.

This was not assault. In fact, it wasn't even a threat.
