First offense Assault 2

Can anyone tell me, how often does someone actually do jail/prison time for this offense? The defendent is a freshman in college (MA), got into a scuffle with his girlfriend. Case has gone to a magistrate who found on the girl's behalf that charges should be filed, though she did not want that. He has to report back sometime in July for arraingment.

Excellent student and athlete, has done more community service than most adults have in a lifetime, totally an isolated incident. Obviously he is my son. Yes we do have an attorney.

Is it common for a kid like this to "do time"? He's never had any trouble ever with the law.
