How serious are anonomous tips taken by the police?

What is the name of your state? California

If the police get a couple of anonomous tips informing them that there is a drug dealer living at such and such address and he's transformed the house he's renting into a major drug house and that there is a lot of illegal activities going on in it, do they actually do any investigating or do they just receive the tip. read it, and toss it into the trash? The dealer in question has a prior conviction for manufacturing drugs but is probably not on parole any more. What is the normal police proceedure in this situation??

Most anonomous tips get checked out if there is enough manpower. The police need more than a tip to obtain a search warrant. If you really want to get a drug dealer out of the neighborhood, go down and sign a complaint. You better be damn sure, if nothing is found it will be your butt in a sling. I did that to an unsavory neighbor I had and he was gone in less than a week.
