An Illegal Search

What is the name of your state? North Carolina
My friend was stopped in his mothers vehicle was searched the officer then search the passenger and found a small amount of marajuana in the passengers possession. He was given a ticket not arrested. Then they told my friend that they needed to search his house or he was going to jail. So he proceeded to take the two officers to his house. Which was about five to ten miles from where they stopped him. They began searching the house and really searched his bedroom for any evidence. They found nothing they didn't give him a ticket and he was not arrested. He felt like his privacy was violated. Does he have room to sue these officers for violating his privacy. Can he make their superior officer aware of what they did? Can they get in trouble for this? How can we put a stop to this happening to someone else? Please tell me what to do.
