A legal question

What is the name of your state? Ohio
2 nights ago, after a lovely night of swimming in the lake, I stopped at the BP station for a pack of smokes. On my way out, I noticed a sheriff pulling into the parking lot and pulling to the other side of the pumps. As soon as I went around him, he followed me, and as SOON AS I put on my blinker to pull out, he pulled me over. I asked why and he said that he ran my plates while I was in the gas station and that the owner had a suspended license. He took my license and put me in the back of the car. Then they searched it, got into my safe box (im in the middle of moving and have a bunch of stuff in the car still) and took the keys and unliocked it. Found a scale, my cashed paycheck, and then a pipe in the visor (I know, I know) as well as a hunting knife. To make a long story short,. I was tiketed with paraphernalia and Driving under suspension. And then taken to the police staion where the warrant for the ticket (which was for a LICENSE PLATE LIGHT BEING OUT) was issued. Out on 350 bond and now have 2 court dates. 1 for the warrant and orig ticket, the other for DUS and para.

What I dont understand is, why he could run my plate on BP property but not be able to pull me over on it? And why, when doing an inventory, do they not have to write down everything in the car? Like 2 prs shoes, 1 sweater, one dog (yes, she was in there too and they were going to leave her and my friend on the side of the road...)etc. AND why can they take my knife and scale and not charge me (iknow thats good) but not have it written down but TAKE IT ANYWAY?

Another thing

I also want to know why they would issue a warrant for a ticket for a lightbulb being out on my license plate. (the reason my license was under suspension and the reason for the warrant)

He probably stopped you when you left the station so he could catch you driving. They are supposed to inventory everything, but sometimes they only inventory items of any value. Knives and scales aren't illegal, so I can't say why they took them.
