What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Nevada... In order for the police to execute a search warrant, do the people who reside there have to be present or can they get let into the apartment by apartment maintenance and execute the search warrant and leave before anyone returns home?

Nope.

If they have a search warrant commanding them to search, they can enter by force or through access by someone else. If they leave before the resident gets home, they should leave a copy of the warrant and a receipt for the property taken. Though, the laws in NV might vary a tad, that's how it generally goes.
