Question

M.i.p

What is the name of your state? Montana
OK, here's my dilema: While travelling in Utah for spring break, I was charged with minor in consumption of alchohol for blowing a .058 breathalizer. In the state of Utah the fine for this offense is 300 dollars. I was told if I mail the fine to the court the case would be considered taken care of. As a broke student, I find it hard to drop 300 bucks on an M.I.P. I don't plan on ever going back to Utah again. If I don't pay this fine will this charge stay in Utah, could an employer find these records, will the charges ever be dropped or forgotten about, or should I just accept the fact that the best solution is to pay the fine. Any advice would be appreciated.

The best solution is to pay the fine. If you do not, a bench warrant will likely be issued. That warrant will show up on a background check wherever you are, and it will create problems in the future.

Thanks for the info. Some of my friends suggested that I just forget about it and not pay iot. I was pretty sure it would cause problems. Thanks again

Perhaps you can arrange monthly payments.

You should pay it, simply because that is the honest thing to do. On a simple background check it would not show up unless you neighbor Utah. On a more detailed background check it will. Pending cases are not listed on a criminal history only conviction and punishments. Now it probably will affect your driver's license. States are taking measures to attach municipal warrant checks when renewing a drivers license. Your license could even be suspended until it was paid off. I found this out the hard way when a sibling used an identification I left behind when I went into the military - it had expired - but he used it to buy beer underage. He also got a ticket on it and I later found out my new DL had been suspended because of it many many states apart and years later. The initial fine of $185. for speeding now cost close to $600.00. It was not good news. These things never go away and will come back to haunt you later.
