Money shortage

I was the manager of a restaurant in Louisiana. I recently quit my job, called the owner and informed them that I was quitting and that they were to come over and take over the restaurant. I was told that they could not do so at that time, so I informed them that I was leaving the keys to the restaurant on the desk in the office and I quit and left. 12 hours later they contacted me and told me that the safe was 1000.00 short, and either I pay them or they would file charges. I balanced the safe in front of witnesses before I left the store. Am I obligated to pay? I never signed any employment agreement stating that I was personnally libel for any money shortages.

If they are only going to file criminal charges if you don't pay up, and you have witness that can back up your claim that the money was in the safe when you left - don't pay.

If they are going to file a small claims action to recover money that you were responsible for and that money came up missing ... another story, I think.
