My dumb brother shoplifting...

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NH

Hello. This question is for my 19 yr old brother who is away at college. I dont have all the exact details but I will give you all the info I have. He was drunk and got arrested last night for trying to steal a 12-pack of beer from a gas station just off campus. He was arrested and eventually let go (I dont know if there was any bail, Im guessing just ROR). He was charged only with the theft and no other charges dealing with any underage drinking, etc.. He has a court date in May and they told him he owes $1500 for the violation. My question is what should he do or expect at this point. If he talks to the prosecuter do you think he could get a lesser charge or at least the fine reduced? Would he need the whole $1500 on his court date or would they likely start a payment plan for him if he at least showed up with a portion?

Extra info--local college student, good grades, community work, no prior arrest record, and was cooperative with the police on the scene.

Thanks.

Your brother should get an attorney to represent him. He should also be looking for a letter in the mail soon. This letter will contain a civil demand for many, many times the value of the beer he stole.

Oh by the way... the extra info you posted about your brother just makes him look moronic ~ does nothing to impress or promote empathy for the thief.
