Needing to turn myself in

What is the name of your state? Nebraska

I currently have fraud and/or forgery charges against me. I am a drug addict who in the past few months, forged some checks in my husbands name on a closed checking account. Passed those check onto to friends to cash me for, etc. Needless to say, I'm currently indigent and cannot afford an attorney. I would like to do the right thing and turn myself in, but I want to make sure I'm not going into this totally blind and I want to make sure my rights are protected. Can anyone please tell me what steps I need to take? I'm currently hiding from the police because of an arrest warrant they have for me. Please help!!!!

You need to contact the police dept and turn yourself in. This will only haunt you until you do. If you cannot afford an attorney one will be appointed to you. Sooner or later they will catch up with you anyway. And it could show you are willing to get this taken care of if you go ahead and turn your self in. While your there ask for some help with your drug problem. Then you can get these charges taken care of and start life drug free. Good luck to you. Kathie

Thank you Kathie for your help. I have been in contact with the police department and am definitley showing an effort to get this taken care of. My concern now is to make sure my rights are protected. I'm afraid of going into this whole thing blind and with no one to represent me. I understand the court will appoint be a lawyer if needed, but I would like to speak to one before I am questioned by the authorities. Does anyone know would the public defenders office even speak to me before I actually go to the police? I have tried to contact their office, but to no avail.

I am not an attorney, so I am not sure about contacting the public defender prior to being arrested. You could try contacting a criminal attorney to see if they charge for a counsultation. I know many attorney's don't charge for the first consultation. so you might try just callin a few in your phone book to see if you could find one. Again I'm not sure if you can actually contact the public defender before one is appointed to rep you. I have never heard of this happening. But doesn't mean it's not possible. Maybe someone will post that knows. Kathie
