Petit Larceny

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York

I was recently arrested in New York for stealing a snowboard. The conditions on the slope were very icy, and I knew that I wasn't going to experience snowboarding at Whiteface Mountain, for a while so I decided to take a bigger snowboard. I know it was very wrong and ballsy of me to do, but it was entirely spur the of the moment so to speak. Of course, this is no reason for me to do what I have done, I regret putting myself at risk. I am 17, have never been arrested before, I have an 1880 on my sats, 3.6 gpa, am in contention for being accepted to Fordham and am looking to attend Fordham for law school, and this act was quite contrary to my regular routine.

I live in New Jersey and have to drive over 4 hours to get to the court.. Is it possible to reschedule my court date, and what should my course of action be regarding the case.

I made a point to be very polite with the officers at the station.. There were only two of them, we had conversed during the whole processing, they told the judge that I had been particularly polite with them, and the judge proposed to remove the cuffs during the arraignment. A friend of mine paid the 500 dollar bail, and I was free to leave. Is it possible to have all this sealed, or somehow not even serve probation or potential jail time??

Is an ACOD possible at all in my situation?

I am a person with a future, I don't want to this mishap during my teen years to destroy that.

Too bad you didn't think of that before. This was not a mishap, you did it deliberately.

Make sure you tell your parents about what happened. Things can fare much better for you if they you an attorney.

I know what I did; after going through this forum Im realizing that my action seriously degrades society. Please, don't take me as some dumb criminal, I get it I am for this.

I just want to know the opinions of people here as to how this can turn out.

And I don't want any sugar on top reply. I get what I did, Im just here for advice.

We can't tell you what a judge's decision will look like ~ it can include jail (maybe he's having a bad day and you're just the straw that broke the camel's back) or probation.

Be ready to have huge fines assessed, not only by the courts but also very sizeable civil penalties.

Look, I told you to involve your parents for a reason, and it wasn't to belittle you. You are going to want their help if you want a positive outcome. We've all done things we aren't proud of, so now it is time to learn from your indiscretion.

In your opinion, is an ACOD possible? or very unlikely?

DabDab, my advice to you was as a parent. This is what I'd want my son to do if he was in trouble. I'll leave answer to that question to someone familiar with New York law; I'm sure a senior will be along shortly.

take care, ana

Thank you for your advice, I was considering telling them after the new year; however, I am scared as to what they will think of me, and my funding towards schooling.

I have a 20-year son and I'd hope and pray that he would confide in me, especially when he is scared. No matter what I will always love my son. I would want the opportunity to help him, let your parents help you. Sit them down and tell them what you did. Take whatever licks you get from them, you really do deserve it.

Your hopes and dreams for Fordham University shouldn't be shattered because you made a bad choice. An attorney can help you and in order to get an attorney you'll need your parents help.

Just got off the phone with a lawyer; told me jail time is highly unlikely, and that he can potentially get it reduced down to very minor charge without probation.

Cost will be 2500$ for legal fees flat fee.

Thank you Wirelessany1, for the advice I am going to tell my parents on Friday about my stupid decision, and hopefully put this all behind me.
