Playground fight

What is the name of your state?undefinedThis is from California.

I was recently involved in an altercation while playing basketball. One of the players said some thing unprinteable (I'll f*** your m*****) and I slapped him. It was a reflex action, that just happend. The other guy was not really injured or anything because the slap itself was not hard. After the incident, we both apologized to each other, shook hands and I left.

I was upset the whole day about the incident and wanted to apologize to the guy and make sure that the incident went no further. So the next day I went to the play ground and was playing when the other guy appeard with the police. I talked with an officer and admitted to the incident (foolish of me??). THe officer semmed to be very understanding. He took my name, phone number and address and told me that this was not going any further.

I am now really worried because I do not know if there is more to it than the incident report/investigation by the police.

Somebody, please answer these questions for me:

Is it likely that the police will file a case against me for this?
Will there be a record of this incident if the police do not do anything more (I am in naturalization process and such a record can really hur me).

If the 'victim' wanted to press the issue it is likely the police would send the report to the DA for review. Given the circumstances, I would suspect that the DA is not going to file unless you have a serious criminal record.

Yes, there will be a record - the police report. But I doubt this will have any effect on immigration.

the police can't file anything. They can only take a report. The offended party is the one who will have to file.

So, next time keep your hands to yourself. An assault charge will get you sent back where you came from, or get you killed....

I've been a law abiding person all my life and was never involved in any thing remotely criminal. This is making me anxious, ashamed, and tense because of the whole situation.

I do not know if the other party pressed charges or not. I was not arrested. The office told me not to worry because this will not go any farther:
In this situation:
* When can I expect to know if I'll be charged with battery?
* What are my options if I am charged?
* Is there anything I can do (I apologized to the guy already) to make this all go away?

Within one year. Realistically you will know within a couple months as you will either receive a summons, a subpoena, or an arrest warrant will be served upon you.

But I doubt this will go anywhere.

Plead guilty or not guilty, and hire an attorney or not. If you cannot afford an attorney one will be appointed for you.

I don't know. But it's probably not going anywhere anyway. Relax.
